SUPER MARIO BROS 3
The world famous Italian plumber, also the icon of Nintendo, made his debut for the NES in 1991 (Europe), but is arguably best remembered through the third in the series. The formula resembles largely that of New Super Mario Bros Wii, however probably the hugest difference between the two is the difficulty. You’ll need to treasure your 1-Ups if you wish to succeed, unlike the much toned down continue-from-where-you-left-off-when-your-lose-all-your-lives policy of today’s Super Mario Bros 2-D sidescroller.
Other than the well known challenge this game provides, there is lots to keep you entertained, from the variety in level design and power-ups to the usual pleasures of wandering the mushroom kingdom in search of the Princess. Diverse in the intricate storyline, (which, to be honest, hasn’t changed in the slightest since) and this classic package has plenty to keep you entertained.

Mario not your style? Prefer a little something that let’s you blast everything in sight with a variety of awesome weapons? Give Megaman 2 a go, the sequel to another very challenging NES title. Defeat evil mad scientist, Dr Wily, as he attempts to eliminate you with eight robot masters, each with their own unique stage, before battling them to retrieve one of eight different powers to use at your disposal anytime! Megaman 2 also comes with one of the most celebrated 8-bit soundtracks of all time!
Megaman was the first to mark the series, and man, was it mega-challenging. The second comes with a difficulty setting to cater for those who are not looking for a beating, but still offers challenge for those who want to be more hardcore! Contra is a jam-packed mayhem-filled wrath of bullets and insanity, and is respected as a truly difficult NES classic! Do not pick this game up without the suitable mindset of getting your ass kicked time and time again, you’ll need a lot of patience, and few things will keep you on your toes quite as much. But it’s worth it, because the adrenaline-fuelled frenzy is a simply astounding experience!
Easily one of the best unbearably hard games of its variety, Contra utilises very effective maneuverability and innovative weapon aiming system which allows incredible control over your player’s movement. This unique design makes for a fully enjoyable high-speed shooter which either could force you to abdicate by relentlessly pushing you to your mental boundaries, or harden you up enough to blast, dodge and destroy your way to an unlikely victory.
