Not knowing anything at all about the Captain America franchise (apart from the nice shiny shield which I saw in the trailer) prior to watching the First Avenger movie I didn’t know any of the story before hand and the trailer didn’t appear to be anything special. Despite this, the film was outstanding.
Though I am no expert I am aware of the rivalry between the DC universe and the Marvel universe and have seen movies from both. This year Marvel definitely seems to be doing well with DC only having one release, the Green Lantern, which was poorly received by critics. From the Marvel films I have seen they are doing a good job leading up to the big ‘oh-look-it’s-all-our-favourite-heroes-teaming-up-to-destroy-an-exceedingly-powerful-and-imminent-threat-let’s-see-what-they-make-of-each-other-and-whether-they-work-well-as-a-team’ movie in May 2012, The Avengers.
Anyway, like I said, Captain America does not disappoint. It is set primarily in 1942 and Chris Evans plays the main character, Steve Rogers, a frail and puny man who wants to join the army and fight in the war. He gets roped into an experiment to create the ultimate super soldier and he is transformed into a muscled superhero, finally able to get some attention from his main love interest Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Both actors are well fitted to their parts and give brilliant performances. It was also nice to see Hugo Weaving playing the villain who was called Johann Schmidt, also known as Red Skull.
Obviously, it wasn’t perfect and there were a couple of things that I wished they had changed. The first thing was that during the film a couple of characters do end up dying and what bothered me is how they weren’t really mentioned much after their deaths (if you have seen the movie you will know which two characters I am talking about). Also I didn’t feel that by the end of the film the underlying love story was properly resolved although this is probably a less common complaint (it really is down to opinion on how resolved something can be).
I’ll give the film an eight out of ten for the acting and good use of setting. I would praise the special effects a bit more but these days the CG being amazing in a Summer Blockbuster is pretty much standard. The plot was easy to follow and had an action packed climax. It is clear that Marvel are trying to expand their universe and I liked how Tony Stark’s father made an appearance and after fellow Filmflux.net member, Kiran, convinced me to wait until the credits had ended we got a sneak peek at the upcoming Avengers movie. After Captain America I will make sure I get to see Marvel’s meeting of the heroes when it is released next May and hope it will be just as thrilling or hopefully even better.
